History of Somnath temple. However it is popularly believed that the first temple existed even before the commencement of the Christian era. The second was built in the period 480-767 A.D. by the Vallabhi kings. This was again replaced by the Pratihara king Nagabhattta II in 815 A.D.                          Somnath Temple

Somnath Temple is an important landmark in Gujarat. It’s popurarity is only exceeded by the Dwarkadhish Temple in Dwarka. The temple is located 5 kms from Junagadh. The temple is considered as one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. It is believed to be the place from where Lord Krishna embarked on his last journey.

The Somnath temple is an ancient temple with many legends associated with it. The original structure on the sea shore is believed to have been built in 4 phases. The one in gold is believed to be built by Lord Som (Moon God), the silver one by Ravi (Sun God), the wood one by Lord Krishna and the stone one by King Bhimadeva. After repeated demolitions, the current structure is built in the Kailas Mahameru Prasad in Chalukya pattern of temple  in india architecture. It reflects the matchless skills of the Sompuras who are the master-masons of Gujarat. The temple has shikhara, Garbhagriha, sabha mandap and the nritya mandap.
